Parent Organization: Student Activities Commission
Shakti is Johns Hopkins University's Classical Indian Dance team. Shakti was started in 2003 by a group of interested students that came together to keep their culture alive through classical dance. The members of Shakti, each unique in their own way, bring
to the table a variety of classical dance styles and different levels of experience. The dancers captivate the audience through traditional steps mixed with fast-tempo beats.
Every year Shakti hosts a Classical Indian Arts exhibition, Nritya Mala, on the JHU campus. They bring together collegiate classical dance and music teams from across the country to share their beautiful culture with everyone. 100 percent of the proceeds
from the show go to the Indian child relief organization, CRY. The event continues to be a huge success year after year, bringing in over $800 per year. Shakti hopes to continue this legacy for many years to come.
